Safe and Secure MIL-STD-1553 IP Core

The world’s first secured MIL-STD-1553B FPGA IP Core.

By means of enhanced physical layer monitoring, Sital Technology’s Safe and Secure (SnS) technology provides continuous real time authentication, along with capability to detect and locate intermittent and continuous open or short circuit faults in 1553 buses.

In approximately the first four seconds following power-up, Sital’s BRM1553D – SnS sensor performs a learning” process by monitoring all message transmissions. Out of this, the sensor and API software compute the “fingerprint” or “signature” parameter values for all nodes on the data bus. Following the learning period, the sensor monitors all received messages and looks for instances where message’s fingerprints don’t match the expected fingerprint.

These fingerprint mismatches indicate either a cyber “spoofing” (or impersonation) authentication violation, or an electrical (wiring) fault condition. The latter includes intermittent or continuous open or short circuits in a bus or stub cable, connectors, couplers, bus terminations or connected LRUs. Further, the SnS sensor is able to determine the specific type of open or short circuit, along with its approximate location.

Following detection of either a cyber authentication violation or an electrical fault condition, the SnS API will immediately inform the application software about the detected condition. In either case, it is then up to the system’s “security playbook” software to take the appropriate system-level action. This can include rejecting data from received messages where an authentication violation has been detected.

  • Sital Safe and Secure (SnS) technology detects message authentication violations and electrical (wire) fault isolations.
  • Capable of monitoring a dual redundant 1553 bus from a single point.
  • No additional hardware is required: IP and software may be implemented using standard transformers, transceivers and FPGAs (or ASICs) by means of IP and software only.
  • Fingerprint learning process following power turn-on determines fingerprints (or “signatures”) for all BCs and RTs on the Channel A and Channel B buses.
  • Detects instances of impersonation or “spoofing” by rogue BCs or RTs based on fingerprint mismatches. If the impersonation is done by a “known” (fingerprinted) BC or RT on the bus, this terminal will be identified.
  • Will notify a BC, RT or Monitor if a message is transmitted by an unauthorized node in real time. This enables immediate rejection of such messages.
  • Since authentication is done at the physical layer, this method cannot be circumvented (“hacked”) by software.
  • Capability to detect intermittent or continuous electrical faults on 1553 buses. These include one-wire or two-wire open and short circuits in bus or stub cables, couplers, connectors, terminators or connected LRUs.
  • Capability to identify the approximate location of open and short circuit electrical faults. Since intermittent faults can be detected early, this enables repairs to be done before faults can result in catastrophic failures.
